Oral Health Care Habits

Brushing Tips

  • Worn out toothbrushes cannot properly clean your teeth and may injure your gums. We recommend replacing them every three or four months.
  • Brush gently with very short strokes and enough pressure so that you feel the bristles against the gums. The tips of the bristles do the cleaning, so don’t compress them.
  • Using a toothbrush with very hard bristles can damage your gums.
  • Be sure to brush thoroughly at least once a day - more often if possible. Children should clean their teeth after every meal and at bedtime.

Flossing Tips

  • Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between the teeth and below the gum lines where your toothbrush can’t reach. Because tooth decay and periodontal disease often start in these areas, it’s important to clean them thoroughly and daily.
  • You may find it helpful to use a commercial floss holder. Children may find flossing easier if they use a loop. (Tie a piece of floss about ten inches long into a circle. Proceed, holding the floss tightly between thumbs and forefingers. Most children cannot floss their own teeth until age 10.)
  • Gums may be sore and bleed for the first five or six days after you floss - a sign that plaque and bacteria are being removed. Consult your dentist if bleeding does not stop in a few days.
  • Improper flossing may injure your gums. Be gentle.
  • Daily plaque removal is critical for the long term success of your dental work.  Maintain a regular oral hygiene routine. Daily brushing (with fluoride tooth paste) and flossing (either with Water Floss or thread floss) is a must for your new dental work. With bridge or connected teeth, it is critical to use superfloss, proxabrushes or flossthreads underneath them. Daily Plaque removal is the key for long term success of your new teeth. Regular cleaning appointments in our clinic (in every 6 month) are also very important. we'll use the appropriate cleaning abrasives and techniques for specific cosmetic work.

  • It’s important to change habits to protect your new teeth.  Any food that could chip, crack, or damage your natural teeth can do the same to your new cosmetic restorations.  Avoid sticky candies, any unusually hard foods substances, (such as peanut brittle, fingernails, pencils, or ice). Avoid or minimize your use of foods that stain such as tea, coffee, red wine and berries. Smoking will quickly yellow your teeth.
  • Let us know if you grind your teeth at night or engage in sports so we can make you a custom mouth guard. If you grind your teeth at night , please wear the night guard we have provided for you or schedule the appointment to have one made.  Adjusting to the look and feel of your new smile will take time.

As well as taking positive steps to practice good oral health and hygiene at home, you should schedule a routine dental examination every 6 months with a professional dentist.
